Als Business Intelligence bezeichnet man Systeme und Prozesse zur systematischen Analyse eines Unternehmens. In einem Cube werden Kennzahlen als Elemente in drei oder mehr Dimensionen dargestellt. Die Dimensionen beschreiben die Kennzahlen und setzen sie in Bezug zueinander.
Ein einfaches Beispiel wäre ein dreidimensionaler Datenwürfel, der das Datum, die Kunden und den Umsatz als Dimensionen hat.
Die Darstellungsform in einem Cube bietet die Möglichkeit Daten sehr flexibel zu analysieren. Durch Slicing and Dicing wird der Würfel in Scheiben und elementare Würfel aufgeteilt, durch Drill Down geht man entlang einer Dimension tiefer.
Ein Cube als Form eines Reports im Unternehmenseigenen Berichtswesen bietet nicht mehr nur statische Informationen, sondern ermöglicht die hochgradig flexible Analyse der Daten unterschiedlichster Weise und Tiefe.
Als Beschränkung finden sich hier nur die vorab definierten Dimensionen.
Man spricht in diesem Zusammenhang auch von Online Analytical Processing und OLAP.
